Call for free bus travel for under 30s

View original

Friends of the Earth have published new research which calls for free bus travel to be extended to under 30s and local authorities should consider making bus travel free to all eventually. The report finds that in order to meet climate change targets, a 20% reduction in car journeys is necessary, even with a faster switch to electric cars and more rapid decarbonation of the electricity grid. They argue that the Department for Transport is failing on climate change and called for a radical overhaul of the transport system as the use of cars account for more than a third of total emissions.

The Transport Knowledge Hub is a fantastic resource and I’m really excited about the opportunity to explore how we can maximise its use among transport stakeholders. In the South East Midlands, investing in local transport infrastructure has unlocked significant economic growth. The Hub offers a formal framework for sharing expertise with decision makers around the UK, as well as learning from the experience of others. This will enable more investment to be directed towards  local and sustainable forms of transport.
