DFT Launches Pacer renovation competition

View original

The Department for Transport launched a competition seeking the best renovation proposals for decommissioned Pacer trains. The competition encourages schools and community groups to submit creative and innovative ideas for converting these carriages over the summer. The competition will run until the end of September and a judging panel, including heritage rail entrepreneur Pete Waterman, will pick the winners. The winners will be announced later this year. Some initial ideas include the conversion of carriages into greenhouses, outdoor kitchens and bars.

The Transport Knowledge Hub comes at a vital time for our transport networks. As our population continues to grow and our roads become more congested, public transport has an increasingly important role to play in keeping our country moving. Investment in local transport infrastructure, such as rail networks and bus services, can have a huge impact on development and economic growth in local areas, so I’m delighted that the Hub will provide the guidance and expertise local decision makers need to make effective investments.
