Hundreds of drivers a day caught on the phone

View original

The Times reported that over 200 motorists a day were caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel following the introduction of tougher punishments. Police reprimanded almost 6,000 drivers in the four weeks after March 1, immediately after the penalties were doubled to six points on an offender’s licence and a £200 fine. One driver was apprehended doing his internet banking on the M5 near Birmingham, while another in Manchester was using his phone while driving 10 children in a school minibus.

With LEPs now responsible for significant amounts of local transport funding decisions, the Transport Knowledge Hub is a timely new tool for local decision makers. At the LEP Network, we know the huge value of giving LEPs a forum to share best practice and engage with other stakeholders, so we are delighted to be involved with a transport-specific project which supports spending decisions that make a genuine difference.
