Minister urges Network Rail to reconsider august bank holiday works

Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry urged Network Rail to reconsider closing the East Coast Rail Line over the forthcoming August Bank Holiday, citing the disruption this would cause to passengers and events along the line. Events that risk disruption include the Ashes Test Match at Headingley, along with the final day of the Ebor festival at York’s racecourse. It is also reported the rail closure would disrupt Rugby League fans travelling to Wembley for the Challenge Cup final, music lovers attending Leeds Festival and people travelling to and from the Edinburgh Festival will also be caught up in the chaos.

The Transport Knowledge Hub comes at a vital time for our transport networks. As our population continues to grow and our roads become more congested, public transport has an increasingly important role to play in keeping our country moving. Investment in local transport infrastructure, such as rail networks and bus services, can have a huge impact on development and economic growth in local areas, so I’m delighted that the Hub will provide the guidance and expertise local decision makers need to make effective investments.
