The Department for Transport announced a new railcard to be launched next week for 1.2 million 16 and 17-year olds. The railcard ensures 50% off rail fares, saving young rail users on average of £186 per year. It will be available to purchase from Tuesday 20 August for £30. Currently, there is a 16-25 railcard which saves rail users 1/3 off their fares. Transport Minister Chris Heaton-Harris said the new 16-17 railcard means “a generation of rail passengers can now benefit from cheaper fares” as well “helping them get to school, college and work.”

The Transport Knowledge Hub comes at a vital time for our transport networks. As our population continues to grow and our roads become more congested, public transport has an increasingly important role to play in keeping our country moving. Investment in local transport infrastructure, such as rail networks and bus services, can have a huge impact on development and economic growth in local areas, so I’m delighted that the Hub will provide the guidance and expertise local decision makers need to make effective investments.
