Plans to transform transport across the north of England

View original Plans to transform transport across the north of England

Transport for the North has announced new draft proposals outlining northern infrastructure for the next 30 years. The Strategic Transport Plan (STP) and the Investment Programme seeks to rebalance underinvestment by investing up to £70 billion to 2050. The funds seek to better connect the whole of the North, increase spending on strategic transport by around £50 per person in the North each year to 2050 as well as flagship programmes such as the Northern Powerhouse Rail; new major roads; improving existing rail network and the continued roll out of smart ticketing. The investment would seek to compliment local and regional transport strategies and promote low-carbon travelling.

The Transport Knowledge Hub comes at a vital time for our transport networks. As our population continues to grow and our roads become more congested, public transport has an increasingly important role to play in keeping our country moving. Investment in local transport infrastructure, such as rail networks and bus services, can have a huge impact on development and economic growth in local areas, so I’m delighted that the Hub will provide the guidance and expertise local decision makers need to make effective investments.
