Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, Richard Leonard wrote an article for Scottish newspaper, The Scotsman in which he is critical of the Scottish National Party’s supporting privatised bus services, arguing that it has prioritised shareholders and left some areas stranded. Noting that an expansion of bus services does not require a large amount of new infrastructure, Richard Leonard wrote that Labour would extend free bus passes to under-25s, and “shift the balance from shareholder profit to public investment and so build a free bus network to serve the whole of Scotland”.

The Transport Knowledge Hub comes at a vital time for our transport networks. As our population continues to grow and our roads become more congested, public transport has an increasingly important role to play in keeping our country moving. Investment in local transport infrastructure, such as rail networks and bus services, can have a huge impact on development and economic growth in local areas, so I’m delighted that the Hub will provide the guidance and expertise local decision makers need to make effective investments.
