Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport, cancelled the process to find a replacement for Southeastern, which runs trains between London, Kent and East Sussex. A new franchise was due to be issued in November 2019, but rising costs have caused the process to be halted and uncertainty that the new operator would be able to ensure benefits for its passengers. This reflects similar trends within the privatised rail system, with networks such as Greater Anglia and South Western reported to have been struggling financially.
