Tunnel Vision: road users’ experience and expectations of tunnels

View original

New research by Transport Focus has looked into how road users experience tunnels and what they want from future designs.  The report made the following recommendations to Highways England:

  • Ensure tunnels are built with road users in mind
  • Ensure that the needs of disabled road users are met, including wheelchair-friendly emergency escape routes
  • Provide timely and accurate information about estimated time travel to allow road users to plan rest stops
  • Ensure rules about speed and overtaking are clear
  • Increase awareness of what to do in case of a breakdown or emergency
  • Learn from other countries about how to avoid monotony and boredom in longer tunnels

The Transport Knowledge Hub comes at a vital time for our transport networks. As our population continues to grow and our roads become more congested, public transport has an increasingly important role to play in keeping our country moving. Investment in local transport infrastructure, such as rail networks and bus services, can have a huge impact on development and economic growth in local areas, so I’m delighted that the Hub will provide the guidance and expertise local decision makers need to make effective investments.
